CITES Certification for Watch Straps: Exotic Leather, Sourcing & Regulations Explained

The Importance of CITES

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) plays a crucial role in the global watch industry, particularly when it comes to watch straps made from exotic leathers. Materials such as alligator, crocodile and lizard leathers are highly valued for their durability, comfort, and distinctive appearance. At the same time, these materials are subject to strict international regulations designed to protect endangered species.

Today, it accords varying degrees of protection to more than 40,000 species of animals and plants, whether they are traded as live specimens, fur coats or dried herbs.

Why CITES Matters for Watch Straps

Many reptile species used in luxury watch straps are listed under CITES because uncontrolled trade could threaten wild populations. CITES does not ban the use of these materials outright. Instead, it ensures that the leather used for watch straps comes from legal, traceable, and sustainable sources, such as licensed farms or regulated harvesting programs.

The Three CITES Appendices Explained

CITES regulates protected species through three appendices, depending on the level of protection required:

Appendix I

Includes species that are threatened with extinction. Commercial trade is generally prohibited.
→ These species are not used for watch straps.

Appendix II

Covers species that are not necessarily threatened with extinction but could become so without strict trade controls.
→ Most alligator and crocodile species commonly used in watch straps fall under Appendix

Appendix III

Includes species that are protected in at least one country, which has requested international assistance to control their trade.

Most exotic leather watch straps are regulated under Appendix II, meaning international trade is permitted only with valid CITES export permits and, in some cases, import permits.

The Species Protection Tag

To ensure full transparency and proof of legal origin, watch straps made from reptile leather are supplied with an official species protection tag. This tag serves as verifiable documentation confirming compliance with CITES regulations.

The tag includes coded details such as:

  1. Issuance of the CITES (here: 2024)
  2. CITES number
  3. Country issuing the CITES (here: DE = Germany)
  4. Position number on the CITES form (here: Position 1)
  5. Scientific name of the used species or subspecies (here: Alligator mississippiensis = 111)
  6. Country of origin (here: US = USA)
  7. Item group (here: watchband = 30)
  8. Customer number (issued for the respective member by the Reptile Species Protection Association and matches the IRV lead seal number)
  9. IRV number (consecutive process number in the reptile species protection ID system)

These coded details allow authorities and consumers to perform a plausibility and origin check, tracing the product back to the original CITES documentation if necessary.

It is strongly advised to keep the species protection tag as proof of legal purchase. For practical reasons, the tag may be removed from watch straps during wear, but it should always be retained and stored safely as official documentation.

EU-Only Shipping Due to Species Protection Laws

Because of international export restrictions related to species protection, many watch straps made from exotic leathers can only be shipped within the European Union. Shipping outside the EU is often restricted or requires complex additional documentation.

Final Thoughts

CITES ensures that exotic leather watch straps can be produced and traded without endangering vulnerable species. Through controlled trade, permit systems, and clear identification measures such as the species protection tag, CITES enables a legal, sustainable, and transparent market, protecting wildlife while supporting responsible craftsmanship and consumer confidence.
